Operations among your peers
Read this the right way. These are IRS 990 figures as filed — a single year, self-reported, and sometimes a year or two old. "Below" on fundraising cost is good; "below" on revenue is context, not a grade. A small cohort means wide ranges. Use it to frame a board conversation, not to settle one.
Where the numbers come from
Every figure is from the IRS: the Form 990 e-file dataset for financials, staff counts and officer compensation, and the Business Master File for status and classification. Peers are grouped by state, by the first letter of the NTEE cause code (education, health, human services, arts and so on), and by total-revenue band. Cohorts with fewer than fifteen organizations fall back to the next-wider group, and the page says so when that happens.
