Below are the questions that come up most often. If yours is not here, or something in the app is broken, use the contact form — it reaches the person who builds the app, not a queue.

Getting started

Three steps after installing:

  1. Open Settings and, under Sync States, pick the states you care about. All states are selected by default.
  2. Under Cloud Sync, tap Sync and let it finish. It reports how many organizations were saved.
  3. Go back to Search and start looking. From this point the app works with no internet connection.

Syncing

The app shows no results, or the list is empty

Nothing is on your device until the first sync. Open Settings, check that at least one state is selected under Sync States, then tap Sync under Cloud Sync. You need an internet connection for this step only.

Sync failed, or failed for every state

Try it again first. A dropped connection mid-sync is the usual cause, and sync picks up where it left off. If it keeps failing, select fewer states inSettings → Sync States, sync those, then add the rest a few at a time. Syncing every state at once is the heaviest thing the app does.

A server-side cause of "sync failed for all states" was fixed on our end on September 1, 2026, and that fix applies to every version of the app, so it is worth retrying even if you have not updated. If it still fails, send us the error message from the alert on the contact page. That message tells us exactly where it stopped.

How often should I sync?

Whenever you want fresher data. The underlying IRS files update on the IRS's own schedule (monthly for the organization list, and as filings are processed for the financial data), and new information is added on our side continuously. A sync every few weeks is plenty for most people. New app features that add data columns also need one sync before the new fields appear.

Syncing takes a long time or uses a lot of storage

Syncing all 17 states downloads several hundred thousand organizations. If that is more than you need, deselect the states you do not use in Settings → Sync States. Deselecting a state removes its data from your device, which makes the app smaller and searches faster.

Can I start over?

Settings → Clear Local Data wipes the downloaded organization database from your device. Sync again to pull it back down. Be aware this is also the reset button for a device-only app: export anything you want to keep first (see below).

Data and accuracy

Where does the data come from?

All of it is public U.S. government record data:

  • IRS Exempt Organizations Business Master File — the list of organizations, addresses, ruling dates and classifications.
  • IRS Form 990 e-file data — revenue, expenses, assets, employee and volunteer counts, officer compensation.
  • Public Form 990 filing images, linked so you can open the actual PDF.
  • State charity registration records, where a state publishes them.

The app is independent and is not affiliated with the IRS or any other government agency.

Which states are covered?

Alabama, Arizona, California, Colorado, Florida, Georgia, Hawaii, Maine, Massachusetts, Nevada, New Hampshire, Oregon, Rhode Island, Texas, Utah, Vermont and Washington. More are added over time. You choose which of them to sync in Settings.

An organization's information is outdated or wrong

The app shows what the most recent public filings say, and those filings lag the real world — a 990 is typically filed several months after the fiscal year it covers, and address changes show up only when the IRS file is refreshed. Syncing again pulls the newest data we have.

If something still looks wrong, send the organization's name and EIN through thecontact form and we will check it against the source records.

I cannot find an organization I know exists

Common reasons, in order of likelihood:

  • Its state is not covered yet, or is not selected in your sync settings.
  • You are searching a name it does not file under. Try the EIN, or a distinctive word from the legal name rather than the program name it advertises.
  • It is not a 501(c)(3), or its tax-exempt status was automatically revoked, in which case it is not in the file we load.
  • It is very new. There is a lag between the IRS granting exemption and the organization appearing in the published file.
Some organizations have blank financials

Small organizations file the Form 990-N postcard, which reports no financial detail at all, and some filings simply do not populate every field. Blank means "the filing does not tell us," never "zero."

What is the score on some organizations?

It is a convenience ranking the app computes on your device from the public data — things like organization size, recent revenue trend, and how complete the record is. It is a sorting aid, not an evaluation of the organization, its finances, or its quality as a charity.

IRS records

How do I see an organization's Form 990?

Open the organization and look for the IRS Records section. TheForm 990 button opens the most recent filing PDF we have a link for. Not every organization has one: 990-N filers have no filing image, and very recent filings take time to be published.

How do I get the IRS determination letter?

The IRS Letter button in the IRS Records section copies the EIN and opens the IRS Tax Exempt Organization Search. On that page, chooseDetermination Letters, paste the EIN, and open the PDF.

The IRS only posts determination letters issued from January 2014 onward. If the organization's ruling predates that, the letter is not online — it has to be requested from the IRS with Form 4506-B. The app tells you which case you are in.

Using the app

Why does the app ask for my location?

Only to sort results by distance when you tap Near Me or use your location in filters. It is read on demand, used on your device, and never stored on a server or sent anywhere. Decline it and everything else in the app still works; you can also search from a typed address instead.

What are lists, favorites and pipeline tags?

Favorites is one flat set of saved organizations.Lists let you group them however you like.Pipeline tags (Prospect, Contacted, Meeting Set, Proposal Sent, Won, Lost) mark where a conversation stands, and you can filter and sort by them. All three live on your device.

What is Field Mode?

Field Mode turns saved organizations into a day of visits. Build a route, work it stop by stop, check in when you arrive, record the outcome and anything you left behind, and skip stops you could not make. Anywhere you dropped something off goes into a follow-up queue so it does not fall through the cracks. Every check-in is also appended to that organization's notes with the date.

Can I get my data out of the app?

Yes. Favorites export as CSV or Excel, a list exports as CSV from that list's screen, and search results export as CSV after you select organizations. Exports carry the full data columns, not just names — they are the practical way to back up or share what you have collected.

Are my notes and favorites backed up?

No. Favorites, lists, tags, notes, routes and follow-ups are stored on your device only — that is what lets the app run without an account. Deleting the app deletes them, and they do not move to a new phone on their own. Export the data you care about.

Does it work offline?

Yes, once you have synced. Search, filters, saved data and organization detail all work with no connection. The exceptions are the things that are inherently online: the map tiles, opening a Form 990 PDF or an organization's website, and syncing itself.

Does the app follow dark mode?

Yes. It follows your device appearance setting automatically.

Devices and versions

What devices does it run on?

iPhone and iPad today, from theApp Store. An Android version is coming in 2027.

When is the Android version out?

In 2027. The Android build already exists and is in testing; it goes on Google Play once the store listing work is finished. If you want a note when it lands, say so on the contact form.

How do I delete everything the app knows about me?

Delete the app. There is no account, no server-side profile and nothing stored about you anywhere else, so removing the app removes all of it. To clear only the downloaded organization data and keep the app installed, use Settings → Clear Local Data.

Still stuck?

Use the contact form. Bug reports, data corrections, feature requests and "how do I…" questions all land in the same place, and we usually reply within a few business days. Including your app version and device model makes a bug much faster to fix.
